Avenue 62 Trunk Sewer Redesign and Rehabilitation Project
Client: Coachella Valley Water District
LOCATION: Thermal, CA
Project Value: $15m
Project Description: Under a design-build contract, W.A. Rasic Construction constructed more than 7,000 linear feet of 42-inch trunk sewer at depths of approximately 20 feet. The site is located approximately 6 miles from the Salton Sea in Riverside County, an area of California that is more than 100 feet below sea level. Due to the project’s elevation, its proximity to the Salon Sea, and surrounding agricultural activities, we encountered groundwater at only five feet below the surface. This required that we design, construct, and maintain an elaborate dewatering system that included four miles of dewatering piping, 700 educators, and 800 well points to remove more than 200 million gallons of groundwater from the very fine silty soil to allow for pipe installation. We installed a 42-inch Hobas fiberglass reinforced pipe encased in a sand/cement mixture trunk sewer line that was designed to cure concrete in the groundwater.
