Sewer Main Emergency Replacement
Client: City of Los Angeles
LOCATION: LOS ANGELES, CA
Project Description: Under an on-call emergency contract, W. A. Rasic Construction mobilized within 24 hours to replace a failed sewer main in a neighborhood that had a very limited work area. Initially, crews set up a sewer bypass system to allow the replacement work to begin. The first order of business was to drill a 96-inch diameter vertical shaft to a depth of 28 feet and install the corrugated metal pipe (CMP) to provide access to the west end of the failing sewer main. Crews hand tunneled, installing 200 feet of 48-inch diameter steel liner plate, to the nearest manhole that was 97 feet below street level. We connected a new vitrified clay pipe (VCP) sewer main to the manhole and installed VCP sewer main inside the newly excavated tunnel that was lined with a steel liner plate. After piping was completed, we pressure grouted the tunnel, backfilled the vertical access shaft, installed/rehabilitated manholes, and restored the area, which included removing, maintaining, and replanting a community rose garden that contains more than 70 rose bushes.
