Beach Club Road Low Water Crossing Project
Location: San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station
Project Description: This design-build project provides the US Navy with continuous roadway access, via Beach Club Road, between Basilone Road and the San Onofre Beach on Camp Pendleton. Prior to the project being designed and constructed, the existing on-grade Arizona Crossing at Beach Club Road experienced roadway closures during and after any measurable rain events at San Onofre Creek. To improve the roadway and limit closures to major rain events only, W.A. Rasic Construction designed and constructed a culverted low water crossing that raised the driving surface elevation by approximately nine feet through the width of the creek area by installing a new triple box culvert that is 24-feet wide by 5-feet tall by 32-feet long. Along with the box culverts, the grade change required us to place more than 2,500 cubic yards of imported fill and construct a new 300-foot-long by 24-foot-wide by 12-inch-thick reinforced concrete pavement section as well as associated concrete slope protection and a pedestrian walkway. To provide for future upgrades of Camp Pendleton, W.A. Rasic Construction also installed four, 300-foot-long, empty utility conduits for future sewer force mains and underground electrical. Construction occurred in an environmentally sensitive area, requiring us to place and monitor extensive protection measures for both the waterway and the native wildlife.
